Dog cooling vests are a great tool to make your dogs warm during humid weather. In hot weather, dogs can often get dehydrated and fall sick because of dehydration. The quick and easy remedy to this problem is to make them wear a dog cooling vest. Vets also recommend this to be a great hack for dogs. You should definitely buy one for your dog.
More often than not, our beloved furry friends fall victim to heat exhaustion and heatstroke as a result of exposure to summer heat. This is especially highly probable for canines in particular as they possess very few sweat glands, and those merocrine glands too are concentrated at the soles of their paws.
Unlike their human counterparts, they are unable to produce an adequate amount of sweat to cool themselves down sufficiently. Dogs are homeotherms, which means that they try to sustain a constant body temperature of 101-102 degrees by adjusting their internal heat gain and loss which is why Dog Cooling Vests are a great idea compared to normal dog harnesses
To compensate for the lack of cooling mechanism they utilise the panting method i.e. core temperature regulation, in their attempts to rid themselves of excessively discomfort causing heat, they pant. Another method they adopt is through vasodilation i.e. when blood vessels around their ears and face expand in an attempt to assist in bringing the blood more to the surface of their bodies.
Panting is not a full-proof strategy as in climates that host extreme humidity and heat they require additional assistance from external sources to help with coping with these extreme weather conditions. Other than the weather, it is pretty obvious that dogs are very active creatures in general, and they possess a dynamic routine that can become a problem during summertime when temperatures soar unpleasantly.
Fortunately, there is an easy remedy offered to pet parents other than of course providing shaded regions for them to relax in and an abundance of cool water sources to keep them hydrated and their body temperatures down, in the form of cooling vests.
Overheating and Heat Exhaustion in Dogs:
Table of Contents
Overheating is an often overlooked phenomenon, however, it is actually quite a problematic occurrence that can even end up being fatal. Common symptoms of dogs suffering from a heat stroke include an extreme amount of heavy panting, unprecedented drooling, irregular heartbeat patterns, reddened gums, muscle tremors and in extreme cases worrisome seizures that may inadvertently lead to a loss of consciousness. In emergency situations like this pet owners should immediately cool their pet’s body and rush them to the closest veterinary treatment centre to get them treated.
Heat exhaustion also known as Hypothermia is a result of the thick fur coating. Normally in order to stay warm during colder seasons their fur traps in layers of air atop their skin. Due to this entrapment mechanism, they are unable to rid themselves of the copious heat buildup that is hazardous to their well being. As a result, they develop the aforementioned symptoms in addition to distressed breathing, uncoordinated movement, and black tarry stool. Very young, very old and brachycephalic breeds’ i.e. short-faced dogs, those with a lot of excessive fat and thicker coats are more susceptible.
If the temperature rises above 106 degrees, the possibility of brain damage or swelling increases monumentally. Abnormal blood clotting, fatigue, damage to their internal organs, all become highly probable. Dogs can even collapse within 10 minutes before more worrisome signs develop. It’s essential to take proactive preventative steps to avoid exposure to unnecessary heat waves.

What are Dog Cooling Vests?
Since dogs aren’t very well adapted to tolerably regulate their body temperatures which are where Dog Cooling Vests come in designed to mould to your dog’s frame. This device works wonders as it essentially operates on the same basic principle that the human body uses in order to keep temperatures bearable i.e. through evaporation. This process is based on the theory that perspiration evaporates from the surface and carries away excess heat along with it. The most important area to keep in mind to try your to keep as cool as possible is the chest and neck region.
In much the same manner a cooling vest possesses a uniquely crafted layer of fabric dedicated to absorbing and locking in water that is evaporating at a progressive rate. Hence your dog’s body heat is also extracted simultaneously. This inner surface of the vest is placed closest to the skin and has cooling properties that will prevent core temperatures from building up. By doing this they’re literally able to cool your dog pretty much all day thoroughly from the inside out. This is accomplished via the pulling extra heat from within the bloodstream after which coolness is evenly distributed throughout the body.
The most beneficial aspect of these vests is the simplistic ideology behind them which does not need any power source whilst also being easy to use. All you will be required to do is immerse the vest in cold water, wring it out a bit and then slip it onto your dog.
Most pet owners feel that simply wetting your dog before exposing them to the sun or any outdoor environment is enough to prevent negative outcomes as it mimics the evaporation process. However, not only is this a messy tactic that will definitely result in a smelly outcome, dogs will dry out extremely quickly. Moreover, fur evaporation isn’t as readily carried out on fur as it is for humans making this pretty ineffective. This doesn’t mean you should shave your dogs as fur is useful in acting as a thermo-regulatory preventing too much heat uptake.
Types:
- Evaporative vests are the easiest to use but not good for humid climates.
- The alternative to evaporative vests is an ice vest which you store in the fridge or freezer and take out only when it’s being used. These are bulkier and colder to use making them slightly uncomfortable.
How to use Dog Cooling Vests
- First, you need to submerge the vest in a bowl of cold water.
- Leave to soak for a few minutes.
- If you gently rub the vest this will accelerate the absorption process.
- After completely soaking it, remove it from the water basin and squeeze out excess water residue.
- Pat it dry with a towel or absorbent material.
- Place the vest onto your dog and if required adjust the neck and chest straps to secure properly.
Dog Cooling Vests Buying Guide
As a pet owner, it is not uncommon to be unaware of what the option out there is for you, especially when there’s an infinite amount flooding the market. However, this buying decision is very crucial to keep your dog comfortable and cool and ultimately avoid a heatstroke from happening.
There are numerous factors to consider before making the final purchase because the purpose behind obtaining it varies if you are an owner that will require it for outdoor extracurriculars like walks or trail runs. These requirements shift if it’s simply going to be used as an accompanying instrument for dogs in summer that has a darker coat.
Although different vests operate on different mechanisms, predominantly you will find the most widely available are those that work on the premise of evaporation. In order to choose the cooling vest, consider the following elements:
Appropriate size selection
Mostly you will find that vests will be made to fit a dog starting from the neck and extending all the way down to the base of the tail thereby covering all vital organs. It’s pretty vital that you are able to determine as accurately as you can the size of the vest for your dog because it directly affects how comfortable it is to wear. As an article that they will be wearing often, it cannot be uncomfortable and must provide a cooling effect over the entire physical frame.
To begin the process of sizing you will first need to figure out is the girth i.e. the size measured in inches surrounding the chest area. This is an influential component because the correct fitting will make sure that proper cooling occurs where it is most needed. After this, you will need to obtain the length measurement of the dog’s back.
Sized on the basis of girth provided in inches, dog cooling vests are retailed in sizes ranging from extra small to extra-extra-large size. At the end of the day always make sure to refer to the manufacturer guidelines provided when trying to choose the fitting size in addition to your dog’s measurement. Weight is normally a secondary or negligible consideration.
Materials:
Dubbed as the most significant feature in a dog cooling vest is its foundational makeup design. It is recommended that you look into those that are manufactured from highly breathable fabrics e.g. 100% cotton-based as these are able to retain 400 times their weight in water and is also a non-toxic material that will not cause a detrimental effect if chewed upon nor will they cause irritation.
What makes them even more appealing is the high levels of comfort they offer in a relatively lightweight package. Nylon outer layers tend to dry out quickly, whilst at the same time, the water repellent part located within the inner folds will ensure the dog remains dry. It is imperative that heat not be trapped within, it should actually be allowed to escape readily through evaporation from the inner cotton layer.
The ideal cooling vest can be machine-washed and are very long-lasting so it can be used over and over again which signifies great value for money. The holes in the fabric should permit water vapour to easily pass through. Wicking material is ideal as it will stop your dog from having to spend all day walking around with bothersome wet skin.
Functioning ability in proportion to time duration:
You need a cooling vest that isn’t going to give up on you and dry completely within 5 minutes or less. It should be able to retain the functioning ability for at least 15 minutes so as to be deemed useful. Despite working well in arid climates, these will dry up faster if the surrounded air lacks sufficient moisture. For users situated in desert-like areas, this is important.
Dogs activity level
If you have an elder dog who is generally less active and won’t be jumping or bustling around, then going for a full-coverage option that’ll span the length of their body makes the most sense. These also work great for thicker and fluffier dogs that tend to heat up relatively faster and will require a more intense cooling instrument.
Some will be parenting younger, more excitable and hyperactive pups, these also have a penchant to dislike wearing additional clothing because of the added restriction to their bodily movements. In this case, you will be better off with a minimalist style.
Reflecting ability
Normally the most useful cooling vests are able to reflect the sun’s heat despite the basic evaporating mechanism it uses to lower the core body temperature. The reflective design is aimed at shielding our dog’s back and sides from sunlight to augment the cooling process.
Compatibility with harnesses, leashes, and collars
Ordinarily, you will be using cooling vests for outdoor purposes, in which case you are more likely to keep your dog on a leash. There are certain vests that will have a leash clip attached to them that will allow you to use the vest as a harness.
Easy to wear:
Most caretakers don’t have the time or energy to deal with a vest that is fiddly and time-consuming to put on and remove. Many come with handy Velcro straps which prove to be the most convenient technique to secure the vest. This also makes sure that no odds and edges stick out that can pinch or irritate the skin. Zippers and clips also act as securing components.
Reflective Strips
Reflective trim is a cautionary tool for dogs that stroll outside closer to the evening. These will signal oncoming cars to slow down and prevent deadly accidents.
Difficult to fit Dog Breeds
Dog breeds vary vastly in size and shape e.g. bulldogs are one such species that prove to be difficult to fit because of their large proportions, bulky necks, and shorter bodies. You need an easy to slip on vest that will completely cover the torso. Bulldogs prefer cooling collars as a more suitable alternative.
Straps
The smartest choice is trying to find the sturdiest straps, preferably extra zippers and Velcro components will all help you get the most bang out of your buck.
Caring for Dog Cooling Vests
Dog Cooling Vests are classified as products that have a generally longer life cycle if they are cared for properly. To do so you must:
- Hang dry them after each and every user session.
- Dry them completely before storing them so as to prevent mildew and mould formation.
- Try to hand wash them.
- Use warm water and mild soap.
- Do not use salt water when soaking the vest.
- Avoid using bleach.
- Do not tumble dry them.
Tips to keep in mind
- Even if your dog is wearing a cooling vest do not leave them holed up in a hot car.
- Cooling vests are approved to be used by dogs of all ages.
- These vests do not require refrigeration at any point. For those that want to further cool the vest, placing them in the fridge will not cause any damage.
- These are preventative tools however, all by themselves they cannot 100% prevent a heat stroke from attacking. Supplemental cool drinking water and shade will also be needed to be provided.
- Try to keep your dogs away from the sun as much as you can.
- Ensure hydration after every 15-30 minutes even if they are wearing the cooling vest.
- Use canine sunscreen.
- Excessive activity with an additional vest will definitely cause the core temperature to increase so don’t go overboard and take interval breaks of about 15 minutes or so to allow them to pant.
- If you want to ascertain the vest’s abilities either feel underneath the vest or check the dog’s ears.
- Check the vest’s moisture level regularly because some vests dry out earlier than others. If the vest is completely dry it’s going to have a warming effect rather than cooling your pup down. This is most important on trail runs where there’s a lack of water availability.

Cool Comfort for Canines: Unveiling the Best in Dog Cooling Vests
As we wrap up our journey through the “Top 10 Dog Cooling Vests,” it’s evident that pet comfort in the summer extends beyond a mere luxury. The safety and happiness of our four-legged friends are paramount, and these cooling vests stand as a testament to that commitment. Embrace the season with confidence, knowing you’ve equipped your pet with the finest in cooling technology. Keep your furry companions cool, calm, and collected under the summer sun, and let the adventures continue
Dogs are naturally very lively creatures. They lack the level of self-awareness we would want to see. They don’t know when to stop, therefore despite the heat, they are willing to press onward. This is why it’s important to recognise the warning indications that your dog is becoming too hot.
Your dog will quickly become dehydrated if they frequently engage in vigorous activity. Male pups, especially those with darker coats, can heat up quickly. Furthermore, dogs with bushy double coats are more susceptible to unplanned hyperthermia. Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Chow Chows, Akitas, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, and other breeds may fall under this category.
